Completed abstracts must be submitted by Friday, August 15, 2008. The first author is responsible for the abstract content. Submission signifies the intent of the author and associates to present the poster at the 2008 Orthopaedic Nursing Conference on Tuesday, October 14, 2008 in Rochester, Minnesota. Conference participants are expected to assume costs related to travel, accommodations, and registration. Notification of accepted abstract and commitment for presentation at the conference will be made by Friday, September 5, 2008. If selected, abstracts will be printed in the conference syllabus.

This conference provides a forum for discussion of spiritual research, particularly as it relates to the interface between spirituality and the mind; for example, research focusing on spirituality and recovery, survival, coping, resilience, self-transcendence, and other health outcomes. Conference attendees will have the opportunity to be a part of an international audience and interact around common research interests.

The goals of the conference are to:

• Promote the conduct of spiritual research across populations.
• Encourage a multidisciplinary dialogue around how the worlds of science and spirituality inform each other.

SUMMIT OVERVIEW
This summit will provide a wide range of topics of highest interest to advanced practice nurses. Topics will include clinical practice, genetics, ethics, policy updates, and trends and issues in coding and billing affecting advanced practice nurses across the nation. 

The purpose of this summit is to provide:

Submit a Storyboard Topic
Thursday, September 18, 2008, a Storyboard Wine and Cheese Reception will provide the unique opportunity for attendees to dialogue with colleagues about clinical practice and workplace innovations in an informal atmosphere. Submit a storyboard topic now to share a practice innovation. The following are examples only and are not meant to limit submissions that can stimulate practice innovation.

  * strategies for family or population based care (palliative, chronic, diabetic)
  * health education and literacy
  * safety/quality

Topic Submission Instructions
Topic submissions should be single spaced on 8-1/2” x 11” document with 1” margins. Use 12-point Times New Roman font. E-mail a one-page topic submission as a Word attachment (.doc or .rtf file ONLY) following the guidelines below. Send to mgambino@kumc.edu . Topic submissions must be received by midnight, August 8, 2008.

Provide the following information in the topic submission:
     - Topic title;
     - List of authors;
     - Contact person (correspondence will be e-mailed only to this person as the primary contact);
     - The clinical or organizational issue/topic (why);
     - Story (what, who, when, where);
     - How evidence influenced the story;
     - Summary of Results/Lessons Learned

Selection Process
All topic submissions will be blinded and independently reviewed by members of the Selection Committee. Selection will be based on the topic’s merits of value to other practitioners, clinical applicability, scholarly presentation, and adherence to guidelines.  

Notification Process
Email notification of acceptance will be made by August 22, 2008 to the primary presenter only. It is the responsibility of the primary presenter to contact all co-presenters and see that they submit the items below. The primary presenter assumes full responsibility for the duplication and distribution of any handouts they wish to use. If selected, topic submissions will be included in the conference syllabus. Presenters will be asked to:

- Complete a Conflict of Interest Form
- Submit a recent resume or curriculum vitae

 The Storyboard displays are 6 ft long x 4 ft tall. Presenters will be able to display Storyboards on this bulletin board style device. Please bring push-pins, fasteners, etc. needed. To be accepted for a Storyboard presentation the author must:           
     -Attend the summit (Fees: regular registration - $195, early-bird - $175, primary storyboard presenter - $175, students - $75)           
     -Be present during the storyboard presentation session on Thursday, September 18, 2008 from 3:45 p.m. to 5:00 p.m.

Presenter Fees
The primary Storyboard presenter is eligible for a reduced registration fee of $175. All Storyboard presenters and co-presenters are required to register and pay a registration fee. Only the primary presenter will receive a discount for registration.

St. Petersburg – Archangelsk – Moscow    October 10 – 20, 2008

Dear Friends, You are invited to an innovative way to visit Russia. Be part of a unique tour to work with energetic Russian Nurses who desire to develop scholarly projects to improve nursing practice in their work settings. Use your expertise to assist Russian nurses in Arkhangelsk during your 11 day trip that will include visits to St. Petersburg and Moscow. Build  professional relationships and friendships during the sharing of workshop sessions with Russian nurses.  Help them develop their projects while experiencing Russia to learn about its history and culture. October 10: We will meet at 3.30pm at the American Airlines Terminal, JFK Airport, New York, NY. Depart at 5.55pm

October 11-12: St. Petersburg,” Venice of the North,” built by Peter the Great in 1703, is one of Russia’s great historic cities. It was the Capital of Russia under the Romanoff Czars. You will visit the world renowned Hermitage, Art Museum, the Peter and Paul Fortress and St. Isaac’s Cathedral. You will also have time for shopping and visit Nevsky Prospect which is the 5^th Avenue of St. Petersburg.

October 13-17: Arkhangelsk, There will be 5 days of nursing workshops that will be coordinated wirh the Nurses Association in Arkhangelsk. The workshops will be intergrated with sightseeing and an experience of Russian history and culture.  Among sites to be visited are the Arkhangels Michael Monastery (1685-99), the Trinity Cathedral (1709–65), Malie Karely – a museum of wooden architecture and folk art  in the Russian northern district that is located on the bank of the Dvina River. You will also visit the Arkhangelsk Museum of fine arts which is one of the largest art museums in Russia and the Historico museum of M.V. Lomonosov, who started the first University in Russia in 1762; it was built in 1892 in the place where M.V. Lomonosov’s native house stood.

 October 18 – 19: Moscow, the capital of Russia. You will visit the famed Kremlin, with its huge brick walls encircling five cathedrals, the well-known St. Basil’s and Red Square. An afternoon will be spent at a 10-acre flea market where you will shop until you almost drop. Prices are the cheapest in Russia, and the variety of dolls, jewery, and art is absolutely fabulous. You will have the opportunity to buy directly from the artists.

October 20: Return to New York: American Airlines Terminal, John F. Kennedy Airport, Finnair Airlines; Arrive in New York at 4 pm on Oct. 20

She also brings rich experience in quality improvement, clinical research and evidence-based practice.  Marie has been recognized as an expert mentor in her prior role as Director of Nursing Quality/Research in an acute care setting. 

Janet L. Larson, PhD, RN, FAAN, Chair of Acute, Chronic and Long Term Care Programs, University of Michigan School of Nursing, Ann Arbor, Michigan.  Janet is an experienced educator and nationally recognized expert in clinical nursing research.  She chairs one of the scientific review panels for the National Institutes of Health.  Her research focuses on designing and testing interventions to promote function and physical activity for people with chronic health problems.  She has successfully mentored clinical nurse researchers and she enjoys helping others develop research. 

In spring 2007 Marie and Janet co-taught a research workshop for Russian nurses in Arkhangelsk.  The workshop focused on using nursing research to improve practice and these nurses now wish to develop research projects to improve nursing and care delivery in their work settings.  US nurses who join us for this 2008 follow-up workshop will serve as project facilitators to groups of the Russian nurses and then work by e-mail with their mentees to help the Russians implement their projects.

Trip coordinator: Sean McGivern, a renowned Russian specialist, has worked with many health care and hospice organizations in Russia. He provides superb expertise and knowledge of the Russian culture. Sean’s many friends and colleagues in both countries place him in a unique position for building solid transcultural connections.
