Dear Friends, You are invited to an innovative way to visit Russia. Be part of a unique tour to work with energetic Russian Nurses who desire to develop scholarly projects to improve nursing practice in their work settings. Use your expertise to assist Russian nurses in Arkhangelsk during your 11 day trip that will include visits to St. Petersburg and Moscow. Build professional relationships and friendships during the sharing of workshop sessions with Russian nurses. Help them develop their projects while experiencing Russia to learn about its history and culture. Spouses and non-nurse friends are welcome to be part of this Russian experience.

October 10: We will meet at 3.30pm at the American Airlines Terminal, JFK Airport, New York, NY. Depart at 5.55pm
October 11-12: St. Petersburg,” Venice of the North,” built by Peter the Great in 1703, is one of Russia’s great historic cities. It was the Capital of Russia under the Romanoff Czars. You will visit the world renowned Hermitage, Art Museum, the Peter and Paul Fortress and St. Isaac’s Cathedral. You will also have time for shopping and visit Nevsky Prospect which is the 5th Avenue of St. Petersburg.
October 13-17: Arkhangelsk, There will be 5 days of nursing workshops that will be coordinated wirh the Nurses Association in Arkhangelsk. The workshops will be intergrated with sightseeing and an experience of Russian history and culture. Among sites to be visited are the Arkhangels Michael Monastery (1685-99), the Trinity Cathedral (1709–65), Malie Karely – a museum of wooden architecture and folk art in the Russian northern district that is located on the bank of the Dvina River. You will also visit the Arkhangelsk Museum of fine arts which is one of the largest art museums in Russia and the Historico museum of M.V. Lomonosov, who started the first University in Russia in 1762; it was built in 1892 in the place where M.V. Lomonosov’s native house stood.
October 18 – 19: Moscow, the capital of Russia. You will visit the famed Kremlin, with its huge brick walls encircling five cathedrals, the well-known St. Basil’s and Red Square. An afternoon will be spent at a 10-acre flea market where you will shop until you almost drop. Prices are the cheapest in Russia, and the variety of dolls, jewery, and art is absolutely fabulous. You will have the opportunity to buy directly from the artists.
October 20: Return to New York: American Airlines Terminal, John F. Kennedy Airport, Finnair Airlines; Arrive in New York at 4 pm on Oct. 20

Marie J. Driever, PhD, RN, Director of Professional Practice and Development, Nursing Operations for Group Health Cooperative in Seattle, Washington. Marie is experienced in designing continuing nursing education conferences and currently serves as Chair of the Western Institute of Nursing Program Committee. She also brings rich experience in quality improvement, clinical research and evidence-based practice. Marie has been recognized as an expert mentor in her prior role as Director of Nursing Quality/Research in an acute care setting.
Janet L. Larson, PhD, RN, FAAN, Chair of Acute, Chronic and Long Term Care Programs, University of Michigan School of Nursing, Ann Arbor, Michigan. Janet is an experienced educator and nationally recognized expert in clinical nursing research. She chairs one of the scientific review panels for the National Institutes of Health. Her research focuses on designing and testing interventions to promote function and physical activity for people with chronic health problems. She has successfully mentored clinical nurse researchers and she enjoys helping others develop research.
In spring 2007 Marie and Janet co-taught a research workshop for Russian nurses in Arkhangelsk. The workshop focused on using nursing research to improve practice and these nurses now wish to develop research projects to improve nursing and care delivery in their work settings. US nurses who join us for this 2008 follow-up workshop will serve as project facilitators to groups of the Russian nurses and then work by e-mail with their mentees to help the Russians implement their projects.
Trip coordinator: Sean McGivern, a renowned Russian specialist, has worked with many health care and hospice organizations in Russia. He provides superb expertise and knowledge of the Russian culture. Sean’s many friends and colleagues in both countries place him in a unique position for building solid transcultural connections. He invites you to join him on this unique trip to Russia.
